Congratulations to our second Spread the Cheer Sweepstakes winners! Marilyn Miller of Lapeer won a $500 Visa gift card after nominating Bear Soup Deli for the giveaway. According to Miller, "The food is wonderful and delicious. I love going to downtown Davison and seeing those businesses alive."
As part of the sweepstakes, the Davison restaurant—which currently offers carryout only—will receive $1,000. Below, we ask Owner Terry Kerouac a few questions about the business.
1) What’s the story behind your business name?
The bear theme comes from before I moved back to Michigan. I had been a chef in Vail, Colorado and ended up taking a job in Alaska just so I could go see bears in the wild. I have photos of them all throughout the deli.
2) You’ve worked in restaurants across the country. What brought you back to Genesee County?
Davison is my hometown. After all my traveling, I moved back when I was 35. That’s when I met my wife, and I decided to stay. A lot of my family lives here. It’s home.
3) How would you describe your menu to someone who hasn’t been to your restaurant before?
It’s a small, quaint deli, where everything is made to order. We slice all the meats and cheeses daily. All the veggies are cut daily. Everything is fresh.
4) What are the most popular items on your menu?
The Grumpy Bear is our most popular sandwich. It’s a panini with pepperoni, ham, roast beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, banana peppers and spicy mayo. It started as a special, but so many people asked for it that we put it on the regular menu.
People also like our house soup, which is tequila black bean.
5) Where do you shop & eat in Genesee County?
I eat out quite a bit. I eat at Black Rock Bar & Grill – Davison, MD's Sports Tavern & Grill, Whitey's Restaurant, Sagano Japanese Bistro and Steakhouse, and Madden's Lounge —so a little bit of everything. paragraph here.
